On Saturday, March 4, Hope Anne Dueck, along Mary Byler and Ruth Ann Brubaker, attended the Amish Abuse Awareness Conference in Middlefield, OH.
A statement from A Better Way.
We are thrilled to be able to offer two new resources for education on sexual abuse, especially geared toward Amish and Plain communities.
Hope Anne Dueck, Mary Byler, and Ruth Ann Brubaker have been working to create a unique and impactful art display. It will be composed of actual items and near-to-real-life replications of clothing worn by “plain” background survivors at the time of their assault/abuse.
Dr. Tara Mitchell and Mary Byler are conducting research on experiences of child sexual abuse, particularly in conservative religious groups like the Anabaptists. They have worked with others to create a survey about child sexual abuse.
Is it Verbal Porn?
You do not need specific and/or graphic details to support a survivor. It is, in fact, extremely harmful to the survivor and could even indicate something very toxic about you. Some professionals refer to it as “verbal porn”.
Truth and Advocacy
As good, ethical advocates, we must ALWAYS stick to the truth, and we must encourage our clients to stick to the truth. It’s OK, if a client does not remember something specific, for them to simply say, “I do not remember.”
Learning to Care
If we wish to help offenders, we MUST offer them only quality, best practice information and resources.
